This video is incredible. I'm very glad to have found your blog (thanks to Citizen Orange for that). Would you mind if I shared a link to this blog with a listserv of feminist journalists and ask them to watch the video? It is something they need to see. Just e-mail me to let me know.
Shocked and so Disappionted in how the U.S. treats us!
omg! This are Families not Criminals! Really shows how our system is so bad, I mean they let rapist, murders out and detain these innocent FAMILIAS With Children! Omg! So disgusted!
Veronica, as a contributor to the U.S. cause (by generous donations out of every single paycheck before I get the money), I'm sorry to hear that you're shocked at how the U.S. treats "us". I realize the video is absurdly one-sided, but the contrast you brought up about our government's treatment of rapists, murders, and families who were found to have illegally entered this country wasn't even remotely called upon in the video. For you to make that kind of leap on your own must make the film-makers very happy, I'm sure. I just wonder what community you live in where the murderers and rapists get dealt with more lightly than families that enter the country illegally. Personally, I live in Central Texas. In MY community, if you murder someone, you stand a good chance of getting the death penalty. Texas does not mess around with that, if you get locked up for the rest of your natural life, they consider that a light sentence. As far as rape is concerned, I think that's about 15-20 years. And these prisons I speak of are horrific places. They're not daycamps with parties and field trips, free movement at all hours, no locks, and snacks in the refrigerator on demand. And the sentence for committing the crime of illegal entry into the U.S. is to get the luxury of staying WITH YOUR FAMILY in a detention center with a higher standard of living than is experienced in central america for a few weeks, then get deported on commercial airliners right back where you came from. I'm sorry, I try to see things from differing points of view, but if you honestly believe that our community treats deportable families more harshly than murderers and rapists, then you're mentally retarded.
wow..I cannot believe how the U.S. works these days. I cannot believe such thing in this country. We, immigrants, ARE NOT CRIMINALS. We came to this country to find a better place to live and to find a good future for our children. We do not molest any american, we just want to live in peace and be a truly american. We respect this country. WE DO NOT DISERVE THESE KINDS OF JAILS, ESPECIALLY OUR CHILDREN. We have commited no crime. People who kill other people or steal or rape are in jail, not people who just want to live in peace and bother no one. Please stop treating us liike that. All man are equal. Thanks for putting this valuable video online. Its a way of showing to all the people in the world of how immigrants are being treated in this country.
Thank you very much for this video. I have posted it on facebook.com so that other people become aware as well. Nobody should be treated this way if they are looking for a better future for their children and are willing to work hard.
In May 2006, the Department of Homeland Security opened its first prison for immigrant families 30 miles north of Austin. It is the first family detention center in the country to be based on the penal model, though plans were quickly made to build more.
The T Don Hutto facility holds men, women (some pregnant), children, and infants, none of whom have a criminal past. Administered by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the country's largest for-profit corrections company, Hutto lacks proper licensing and medical facilities, and has been proven to traumatize families.
This blog is dedicated to providing information on the growing movement to shut down Hutto and prevent this model of immigrant detention from spreading nationally.
